Payments in gambling
Payments are where gambling regulation meets the financial system. Operators need fast deposits and withdrawals, banks and card schemes need to manage risk, and regulators use payments both to protect players and to shut out unlicensed sites.
Methods
- Cards: coded as gambling transactions by the card schemes, which lets banks apply their own rules and lets customers block gambling spend.
- Open banking and instant bank transfers: fast account-to-account payments with verified account ownership, increasingly preferred in Europe.
- E-wallets and vouchers, and local methods such as instant payment systems in Latin America.
- Crypto: accepted by some offshore operators, and by very few regulated ones.
Costs and risks
- Processing fees and payment provider margins are a significant cost per deposit.
- Chargebacks cost fees and lost revenue and, if frequent, can end a merchant account.
- Withdrawal speed is a competitive factor and, in several markets, a regulatory requirement.
Rules
- Credit card bans: Great Britain, Ireland and Australia (for online wagering) do not allow gambling with credit cards.
- Payment blocking: several countries require banks and payment firms to refuse payments to unlicensed gambling sites, such as Norway and Poland.
- Deposit limits and affordability checks: cross-operator limits in Germany, and checks on high spenders in several markets.
- Anti-money laundering: source-of-funds checks and monitoring apply to payments as much as to accounts.
